Imagine a world without teachers. Do you think the world will see committed scientists, valiant presidents, prudent economists, caring doctors and passionate sports players without educators to teach them? It is incomprehensible. See that the various professions mentioned have individual traits and adjectives associated with them – committed is the term to describe scientists, valiant for presidents, prudent for economists, caring for doctors and passionate for sports players. It is because schools are not just the training ground for people to land profitable jobs and careers. Schools are where philosophy and truths are instilled to students. As not to be confused with these two important principles, these words of L’Engle must be imparted to all educators and teachers.
Knowledge is understanding the various principles and theories of topics and subjects that are important to learn. They can be the basic Math, English and science or the more convoluted areas of study like medicine, architecture and drawing. Truths on the other hand are principles or irrefutable facts. Good examples of truths are love, life and death. For easy discussion, let us choose love as the topic for truth and how it can be added to traditional lessons in classroom discussions.
Let The Children Explore
Before adding truths in average lessons, examine the level of the understanding of the students. In no way force a child to learn. It is understandable that a little child will not appreciate fully complicated matters like love if explained in compound ways. If teaching about the environment and nature, let the children analyze their planet. Go on a field trip so that they can grasp more the beauty around them. Have the kids quantify all the beautiful things that they see like the vegetation, animals, flora, clouds, stars and moon. Tell the child that features is part of the ecosystem and we need to protect them. Explain the association of love with fostering and caring.
Show And Tell
To encourage children to disclose what they have and what they know, show and tell activities are greatly encouraged. Also, this activity is enriching the communication skills of kids. In the next show and tell, ask the kids to bring any living thing like a beautiful flower or a pet fish. Ask the child how they can show their love and care for these animals. By feeding their pets and watering the plants they are showing their love and feelings for these living creatures.
Love Is Unconditional
In the next math class, don’t just end the lesson with home works and problem solving activities. Teach the children that love is like arithmetic. It is simple but can get very difficult. There are many kinds of love and they are defined differently. Love can be like fraction – either you give half of yourself or your whole self. But the greatest kind of love is the love that is unconditional. No limitations and no boundaries. Unconditional love does not count records of wrongs. One loves because he loves, not because there is a sum to be paid.
Teaching Love In Creative Arts
Art lessons are very arousing for kids. Explain to kids that to show their love, they need to be creative. They can give special cards even with no occasions. They can tell their parents how much they love them in the most resourceful way. Have them share their ideas.
