Amazing Stories of Perseverance and Overcoming Adversity in Life
“Our greatest weakness in life lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.” – Thomas Alva Edison
Before butterflies could fly, they have to endure a very painful and challenging process of developing their bodies and wings. It is God’s way of letting us understand that we all have to face adversities and trials in life in order to become whole. If we are to live lives without the pain and challenges, we lose the ability to become strong and tough. For butterflies, they can’t fly without developing their wings.’
Each of us has our own story of perseverance and fighting adversity. While others fail because of those trials, many are able to manage their way out of it and live on a successful life. As we can see, there is no better way to shape our destiny than to be able to overcome things that make us fall apart and stop us from getting the kind of triumph we need.
Here are some inspiring stories of perseverance and overcoming adversities in life to keep you inspired and convinced that there is more to life than failures and letdowns:
Ma Li
19 year old Chinese ballerina Ma Li was one of the most gifted in her generation. She was the epitome of talent and an example for many young girls of her age. But everything she had suddenly disappeared when she lost her right arm because of a car accident. Because of the unfortunate incident, she nearly gave up of her life. Her friends abandoned her and she even attempted to end her own life. But after half a decade of failure and loss of faith, she eventually rose up to the challenge of life with the help of her parents and a partner in the name of Tao. Both she and Tao returned to theatre where she found out that life cannot and will not stop even if she’d been through the toughest trial a 19 year old can face in her life.
Jean Dominique Bauby
Ask this – Can you write a book and be able to label it as a bestseller without the use of the hands, devoid of clear vision, and lacks the ability to talk? The Diving Bell and the Butterfly is a bestselling book by Jean Dominique Bauby, a French author who suffered a stroke and a condition called locked-in syndrome that enables the mind to fully operate without much of the motor and physical skills retained. With the kind of adversity he faced, he never backed out of his original calling of writing literary pieces. He wrote the book after suffering from the stroke.
Sandy Scott
American Sandy Scott is an example of not allowing age to abruptly end your search for a good and satisfying life. At the age of 64 and after suffering an accident that nearly killed him and broke his neck, he captured twelve cycling state titles for the senior category and was able to pull off new records. Even at the age of nearly 70 where majority of us even fail to get out of bed, Sandy is still going at it.
Rosa Parks
Racial discrimination was a fact of life in the United States in the early and middle part of the 18th century. Black Americans were racially segregated and they did not enjoy the liberties of the white population. And then along came Rosa Parks, a member of the black population. Amidst the pains of discrimination and slavery suffered by her race, she did not blink and bravely faced adversity and punishment by denying giving her seat to a white male passenger in a bus. Because she defied a city ordinance, she was later imprisoned for a crime that was not supposed to be a crime, but a manifestation of equality and liberty.
Derek Redmond
If you are a fan of the Olympics, then you know the most inspiring moment of the 1992 Barcelona games. This is where everyone witnessed the courage and perseverance of a British track athlete named Derek Redmond. He was on his way of winning the semifinal of the 400m run when he suddenly tore his hamstring. An average athlete would succumb to the pain and failure of the moment but Derek did not let it ruin his dreams and promise to his country. With all the pain and suffering, he endured and got to the finish line with the help of his father. He went into tears both because of the pain and the disappointment. Though he did not win, he certainly won the hearts of all those watching. Since then, the moment because a very significant part of the history of the Olympics and became a symbol of humanity and courage for Olympic athletes.
These people symbolize how anyone can be strong enough to survive the pains and unfortunate events in life. We have to understand that we can’t get out of it easy. We all have to endure everything that comes our way, no matter what it takes.

Every Picture Tells a Story $5.98 Once upon a time, Rod Stewart was not vamping indiscriminately about “Hot Legs” and asking “D’ya Think I’m Sexy?” He was a singer with a gravel-voice approximation of Sam Cooke and excellent taste in cover material. Here, he’s toned down with folksy covers of Tim Hardin (“Reason to Believe”), Bob Dylan (“Tomorrow is Such a Long Time”), and Arthur “Big Boy” Crudup (via Elvis, “That’s All Right Mama… |

His strict fathe… |

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (Walt Disney’s Masterpiece) [VHS] $12.79 Disney’s 1977 The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh may be the last word on (animated) Pooh because it so faithfully honors the first word on Pooh, penned in the 1920s by British storyteller A.A. Milne. Gently paced, subtly humorous, and blessedly understated, this adaptation reflects Walt Disney’s original vision to develop the beloved British bear for a wider audience. The film is essentially a… |

The Jungle Book (Fully Restored 30th Anniversary Limited Edition) [VHS] $12.14 Disney’s 1967 animated feature seems even more entertaining now than it did upon first release, with a hall-of-fame vocal performance by Phil Harris as Baloo, the genial bear friend of feral child Mowgli. Based on fiction by Rudyard Kipling, the film goes its own way as Disney animation will, but the strong characters and smart casting (George Sanders as the villainous tiger, Shere Khan) make it o… |
