Pink Floyd – Still in a League of Their Own!

Considering that to date, Pink Floyd have sold over 200 million albums, it’s easy to understand why they are still considered to be one of they greatest bands of all time. Not only did their early days of experimental music attract a large following, but there consistently brilliant live performances are renowned all over the world. Interestingly enough, even Pink Floyd are essentially a British band which formed in England during the 1960′s, about half of all record sales have been in the US where Pink Floyd merchandise continues to be collectable.

During their initial psychedelic stage it was Syd Barrett who led Pink Floyd but due to his erratic behavior, he was eventually replaced by bassist David Gilmour and it was shortly after Gilmour’s arrival that Pink Floyd as a band gained worldwide popularity with the release of their album, “Dark Side of the Moon” in 1973. It was only a matter of time before “Money”, a single on the album, pushed “Dark Side of the Moon” to Number One status in America. Astonishingly, “Dark Side of the Moon” remained in the Billboard top 200 albums for 741 weeks, and even today, it remains one of the band’s most popular recordings with sales so far sitting at around a quarter of a million albums.

Having first formed in 1964, and having been known by different names such as Abdabs, Sigma 6 and The Meggadeaths, Pink Floyd is essentially a recreated band. Their decision to later tour with Jimi Hendix was by all accounts a wise decision, and one which marked the start of their US fan base, even though by that stage, they were already immensely popular in Britain. As most will agree, even though their music is so enthralling, it’s essentially their live performances which have gained them the most recognition.

By using a range of special effects such as smoke, psychedelic patterns and pyrotechnics, Pink Floyd has long since established a reputation for delivering magically enthralling shows. In fact, one only needs to look at their use of laser light displays, flying pigs passing overhead and inflatable balloons, to realize that when Pink Floyd perform, they aim to satisfy all the senses of their fans who come to see them. A good example of this could be seen at their 1977 live performance of “In the Flesh”, during which they used giant inflatable “Nuclear Family” balloons to show Mom, Dad and their two children. Even so, it was eventually their production for their album “Another Brick in the Wall” that forever changed the way by which musical performances will be measured.

Performing live at the London “Live 8″ concert in 2005, it was the first time the whole band performed together, including Roger Waters, since 1981, and of course, it was a huge success. Even today, fans can still indulge in a phenomenal range of Pink Floyd merchandise from hats and clothing, to photos and programs. Of course, this is in addition to all the many Pink Floyd videos and albums which are available. While albums such as Dark Side of the Moon, The Wall, Wish You Were Here, Animals, and Shine on You Crazy Diamond, may well be the bands most famous releases, all their albums have in fact been incredibly successful.

Unfortunately, Pink Floyd has made no mention of performing anymore tours but then again, these music wonders have often surprised us in the past, so who knows what they’ll decide to do next. As they so rightly deserve, Pink Floyd have been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame, in addition to the many other honors they’ve received over the years. Of course, it’s hardly surprising that fans continue to search for the latest Pink Floyd merch, even if the band isn’t currently active.
