The Battle Hymn of the Republic Interpretation?
I have a S.S. project dealing with the Civil War, and we were asked to interpret a Civil War song’s lyrics – explain the meaning.
I chose “The Battle Hymn of the Republic” by Julia Ward Howe.
No, I’m not asking you to do my homework – I already interpreted it the best I can (look below); I’m looking for what you think the lyrics mean.
(And please don’t say “Google it” because it’s pretty obvious to do that.)

My interpretation:
- God will destroy the vintage (superior wine) of the “war grapes” [Confederacy]
- God will defeat the Confederacy
- If the North deals with His sinners, they will be under His benevolence
- God will never retreat from the Confederacy
- He will make all men (slaves) free
I think you’ve missed the meaning of the grapes line. God is “trampling out the vintage where the grapes of wrath are stored”. That means he’s *making* vintage wine from the “grapes of wrath”. The “grapes of wrath” are mentioned in the book of Revelation. You’d better research that phrase a little more, but basically, it means the day of Judgment is at hand.
