Ben Hur

Wilfred of Ivanhoe vs. Judah Ben-Hur – Who would win?
Which Character of Classic Literature wins this one in a fight? The Jewish Prince or the Hero of the Crusades? No Prep, Standard Equipment.
Wilfred of Ivanhoe is from Sir Walter Scott’s “Ivanhoe”
Judah Ben-Hur is from Lew Wallace’s “Ben-Hur”
Judah Ben-Hur’s military training consisted of throwing javelins at lions as a youth with Masala. He was also a great charioteer, but that was a racing chariot he drove, so it can’t count as strictly military. Ben-Hur’s most remarkable quality was his determination which must be counted as a big plus on his side.
Wilfred of Ivanhoe was trained from early childhood to be a professional warrior, specifically a knight, which means that he would be an expert with a number of weapons as well as a excellent horseman. In his entire known career he lost only one engagement, against the Norman turncoat, Maurice de Bracy, and even then De Bracy was unhorsed.
Standard equipment would mean full late 12th century gear for Ivanoe – mail hauberk with plate reinforcements, mail coif and great helm, mail hose, gauntlets, shield, war sword, dagger, lance and a warhorse wearing mail and jack leather bard (horse armor).
Judah Ben-Hur’s kit would be a racing chariot and harness, four Arabian stallions, a knife or dagger, a whip and lots of nothing else — no amour, no sword (forbidden to charioteers), no shield.
In the initial charge Ben-Hur would be formidable — four horses cantering abreast is terrifying coming at you. But Ivanhoe could out maneuver his opponent quite easily since a chariot can’t turn like a ridden horse. On the first pass Sir Wilfred could sidestep (called a “full pass” in dressage) the oncoming chariot and then lance Ben-Hur in the back as drove past, not that he would, since he’s a knight and is supposed to refrain from such back stabbing. However, the issue must be decided in the end, and seeing no way Judah Ben-Hur can even get at Sir Wilfred, I must award the day to Ivanoe.

El Cid [VHS] $9.95 Technically ambitious but artistically underwhelming, this 1961 epic by Anthony Mann (Man of the West) stars Charlton Heston as an 11th-century hero who drives the Moors from Spain. The film has been described as “glum,” and that is indeed apt for a story that focuses so much on its central character’s losses in the face of his simultaneous, mythic approbation. Then again, Mann has always been int… |
