SO WHY WOULDN’T YOU WANT TO JUMP OUT OF A PLANE?
The man who gave us the world’s most famous painting – that’s the Mona Lisa of course – also gave us the very first idea for skydiving way back in 1485. Leonardo da Vinci was a man of many talents – architect, musician, engineer, scientist, inventor and artist – and his sketches for a pyramid-shaped, wooden framed parachute were the very first indications of man’s belief in his ability to fly.
But while he dreamt of parachutes, da Vinci would surely not have dreamt that skydiving would be such a popular activity around the world. And it would have been beyond the realm of even his fertile imagination that skydiving would inspire people to do incredible things – like four-year old Toni Stadler breaking the record for the youngest jumper or 400 jumpers joining hands in the world record for the largest formation of freefallers.
The sport began in the late 18th Century with the successful landing of Frenchman, Andre Jacques Farnerin who jumped from a hot air balloon. During the world wars, parachuting was a necessary survival skill in the event of a plane crash, and it was really after the second World War that it evolved into an adventurous hobby. During the 1950s and 60s, the sport became more regulated and commercialized with the formation of official clubs. Intially, skydiving was seen as a hugely risky activity but as it grew in popularity and the facts became more widely known, more and more people signed up for their ‘leap of faith’.
So what’s the risk jumping from an aeroplane at anything from 10 000 to 13 000 feet above the ground? Well, if the experts are to believed, it’s not nearly as risky as driving to the shops – and much more exhilarating! Freefalling at around 110 miles per hour for between 45 to 60 seconds (approximately 1 000 feet for every six seconds of freefall) and then drifting downwards for about five minutes, in total peace and quiet and surrounded by breathtaking scenery – it’s an unbeatable sensation claim the thousands of professional and recreational skydivers all over the world.
It’s hardly surprising that skydiving features on so many people’s list of things they want to do. And if you don’t want to wait until your twilight years to try it (unlike 101-year old Australian Frank Moody who successfully completed a tandem jump or 92-year old Herb Tanner of Ohio who was the oldest solo jumper on record – complete with artificial knees and hearing aid) – there’s a solution. And while the skydiving dream may not be for you – you may know someone who aims high?
