Christies Poirot

British TV Reviews: A Brief History

Popular TV programmes in Britain are forever receiving rave TV reviews and continue to charm audiences across the globe making British TV arguably the most creative and diverse in the world. In 1932, BBC TV was officially launched and has since created some of the best and varied programmes in the world. Gripping audiences for over 50 years, ITV’s Coronation Street is one programme that has withstood the test of time.

Controversial talent shows like Simon Cowell’s Britain’s Got Talent and The X Factor continue to absorb the planet. However, Britain also gave the world brilliant programmes such as Jacob Bronowski’s The Ascent of Man and epic nature series like Life on Earth and The Blue Planet, wonderfully created by David Attenborough.

Timeless and indestructible comic creations like George Cole’s Arthur Daley in Minder, Arthur Lowe and co in Dad’s Army, John Cleese’s Fawlty Towers and the classic Only Fools and Horses reflect the British way of life even more convincingly than the serious TV documentaries for which Britain has become world-renowned.

In the Seventies and Eighties the Monty Python series became a global legend, while comedian Ricky Gervais recently achieved great TV reviews in Britain and also managed to win the hearts of the American public.

The BBC’s successful re-launch of Doctor Who in 2005 made the TV news, although British Sci-fi is often in the shadow of iconic Hollywood series such as Battlestar Galactica. Nigel Kneale’s Quatermass stories remain influential 60 years later, while popular TV detective programmes include Agatha Christie’s Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. In recent times the spy thriller has resurfaced in the BBC’s enduringly successful Spooks.

British TV history has also been impacted by other dramas like Our Friends in the North, The Jewel in the Crown, State of Play, and the original Upstairs Downstairs. Downton Abbey was a surprise recent hit for Julian Fellowes and has heralded a new wave of the iconic British costume drama.
