Cheesecake Highlights a Night of Casual Entertaining

It is certainly not yet time to declare the old fashioned cocktail party of the mid-twentieth century is a thing of the past, but there is a recent trend in entertaining toward less formal events. Think of Carey Grant or Fred Astaire, dressed in their tuxedos; or picture Betty Grable in her flowing gown. They gathered in an opulent estate, sipped martinis and waltzed through the night. Can you honestly dream of your family, friends or neighbors relaxing in that kind of atmosphere and actually enjoying it?

Most of us don’t have friends with opulent mansions; neither do we have the budgets that allow us to stock up on many bottles of imported gin and tin after tin of beluga caviar. Furthermore, we not as comfortable in tuxedos as in open shirts. Exquisite coffee and a luscious dessert may be more appropriate ingredients for the relaxed social evenings of our times.

The bakery around the corner has perfectly edible cheesecake, perhaps purchased from a local distributor, but you might want to consider something a bit more titillating to the taste buds of your guests. You can have unique cheesecake delivered to your door the day of your party from as far away as across the country.

Consider a selection of cheesecakes to meet the varied tastes of your guests. You might want to include a turtle cheesecake for the people who enjoy a bit of chocolate in any dessert. You can decorate with just a few shavings of dark chocolate, and all the people can pretend that they are eating a health food.

A key lime cheesecake, provides a welcome alternative for those of us who enjoy combining tart and sweet. Think about a couple mint leaves as a garnish.

Some of your guests might have some dietary restrictions (or have more self discipline than many of us). For those friends, include a gourmet low carb, sugar free cheesecake alternative. While that might not be considered a health food, it allows splurging within acceptable limits. An orange wedge makes a healthy addition to this plate.

Tastefully label these alternatives on the buffet so everyone can choose a slice of heaven that fits their own tolerance for sin.

Borrow some extra coffee makers, so that you can offer several coffees. Choose one of the interestingly flavored roasts. Add to that a robust, non-flavored alternative from Jamaica, perhaps. Of course, don’t forget the decaf for anyone staying away from caffeine.

Keep the cream, non-fat milk and non-dairy creamer in an ice bath in a shallow, decorative bowl. Throw in some cubed sugar with sterling silver tongs, for a decorative touch.

This is the type of informal entertaining that does not sacrifice the good taste that has always been the necessary ingredient for any party in any era. Besides, there is no morning hangover the next day. Doesn’t this sound more contemporary to you?

Give Up

Give Up

$6.00

Give Up, the debut release by this indie supergroup composed of Ben Gibbard from Death Cab for Cutie and Jimmy Tamborello from Dntel, is a smart, quaint, and often transcendent little pop record. The roots of the album lie in “(This Is) The Dream of Evan and Chan,” a woozy, gorgeous song recorded for the rad 2001 Dntel album Life Is Full of Possibilities. With Jimmy in L.A. and Ben in Seattle, the…

Michael Jackson - The One

Michael Jackson – The One

$3.35

Michael Jackson: The One is a persuasive summary of the Gloved One’s career highlights. Jackson appears only in old clips, but the case for his status as an innovative and dominant artist in the 1980s and early ’90s is made by an impressive array of witnesses: Beyonce Knowles, Isaac Hayes, Dick Clark, Wyclef Jean, Missy Elliot, and others. Clark recalls meeting child-star Michael and realizing he …

Hidden Hollywood - Treasures from the 20th Century Fox Vaults

Hidden Hollywood – Treasures from the 20th Century Fox Vaults

$14.98

The proper title isn’t so much Hidden Hollywood as Cool Stuff We Found in the Vault at Twentieth Century Fox. This grab bag consists of segments snipped from Fox pictures for reasons of length or content, and the results are uneven but fascinating. Musical numbers abound and provide some fun, but Fox wasn’t exactly MGM (and remember, this is the material deemed expendable). The jewels in the first…

Gone With the Wind [VHS]

Gone With the Wind [VHS]

$1.49

David O. Selznick wanted Gone with the Wind to be somehow more than a movie, a film that would broaden the very idea of what a film could be and do and look like. In many respects he got what he worked so hard to achieve in this 1939 epic (and all-time box-office champ in terms of tickets sold), and in some respects he fell far short of the goal. While the first half of this Civil War drama is tau…

It Happened One Night [VHS]

It Happened One Night [VHS]

$3.55

Director Frank Capra (Mr. Smith Goes to Washington) took home every Oscar in the book (well, okay, all the major ones) for this seminal 1934 comedy starring Clark Gable as a hard-bitten reporter who stays close to a runaway heiress (Claudette Colbert) rather than lose a good story. Funny and sexy, the film is full of memorable scenes often referred to in other films, such as the “walls of Jericho”…

It Started in Naples [VHS]

It Started in Naples [VHS]

$14.95

A minor entry in the fabled careers of Clark Gable and Sophia Loren, It Started in Naples is slight, but enjoyable fluff. As the title indicates, the story begins in Naples, although the action takes place on the Isle of Capri. Michael (Gable in his penultimate performance) is a lawyer recently arrived from Philadelphia to put his late brother’s affairs in order. The result of one of those “affair…

Gone with the Wind (Two-Disc 70th Anniversary Edition)

One of the best-loved films of all time, producer David O. Selznick’s grand-scale adaptation of Margaret Mitchell’s bestseller won 10 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actress. Rural Georgia during the Civil War and the Reconstruction provides the backdrop for the epic love triangle between coquettish Southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh), gambler-ro…
