Mining Jobs in Queensland Have a Solid Outlook
Mining and its ancillary services represent one of the largest economic contributors in Queensland. That includes being one of the largest employers. The mining industry receives good support from the state government.
The key mining resource in Queensland is thermal coal located in the Bowen and Surat Basins. Major mining towns are mainly located in the souteast and include Bowen, Collinsville, Glenden, Nebo, Coppabella, clermont, Moranbah, Dysart, capella, Middlemount, Tieri, Emerald, Blackwater, Springsure, Rolleston, Biloela, Moura, Theodore, Baralaba, Taroom, Wandoan, Miles, Dalby, Chinchilla snd Monto. Most of these towns have small populations with tight knit communities.
Most mining workers are temporary residents in these towns. They are repositioned by their employers every few weeks on a fly-in-fly-out (FIFO) or drive-in-drive-out (DIDO) basis for alternative work-leisure rotations. This practice may take some getting used too but once workers find the groove they seem to appreciate the extended leisure periods it provides.
Coal production in these regions is directed both to domestic consumption and export. Exports are railed to Queensland ports and then shipped to 31 countries. Thermal coal is used in Queensland for electricity generation. Massive thermal coal reserves dictate that coal will remain the prime fuel for electricity generation in the state. Coal production in Queensland has increased dramatically over recent years. The volume railed totaled 79 million tonnes in 1996-97, 143 million tonnes in 2003-04 and 230 million tonnes in 2009-10.
Another major mining town is Weipa, situated in far north Queensland on the west coast of the Cape York Peninsula. Weipa is a major bauxite producer and exporter. Mining commenced in 1962. The town was initially established by Comalco (now known as Rio Tinto Alcan), the company that owns the resource. Weipa is the most populous town on the Gulf of Carpentaria coast with about 3,000 people. Weipa is also an important point for cattle exports.
Interestingly, Weipa is situated just south of Duyfken Point, a location now generally agreed by historians to be the first recorded point of European contact with the Australian continent. Dutch explorer Willem Janszoon sighted Duyfken Point in 1606 while travelling on his ship the Duyfken. The rich, red color of nearby cliffs was noted by early Dutch explorers during the 1600s and 1700s and by Matthew Flinders during his circumnavigation of Australia in the 1800s.
