Understand SNL’s Impact on Comedy Films with Satellite TV

Ever since the Beatles parody All You Need is Cash was released directly on television in 1978, the creative team at Saturday Night Live has been looking for ways to turn their other sketches into box office blockbusters. The most recent adaptation of a SNL sketch into a full-length feature film is MacGruber, which was just released in 2010. If you haven’t seen much Saturday Night Live, you’re missing out on the most significant institution in the American comedy scene. Search your satellite tv listings to find out when re-runs of the show air near you. Once you’ve seen the classic sketches, you’ll be able to judge for yourself about how the movies compare to the show.
Although it’s unclear how successful MacGruber will be, many of the initial films that were inspired by SNL were highly successful. Of course in 1980, Blues Brothers was released and quickly became a massively successful Hollywood film. The film starred Dan Aykroyd and the late John Belushi, who go through a number of hilariously outrageous experiences on their quest to throw a charity concert. They have to reunite their old band and organize the concert in a week and a half, or the Catholic school they attended as kids is going to be forced to close! This hilarious film continues to influence comedy today, so make sure you watch it on one of the many comedy channels on satellite tv.
In 1992, Wayne’s World, staring Mike Myers and Dana Carvey, became the second SNL film to hit theaters across America, and it was just as successful as it’s predecessor had been. In the film, Myers and Carvey reprise their roles as Wayne and Garth, two young grunge fanatics who host a public television show out of Wayne’s basement. The film follows the duo as their show moves up to a real network, and they struggle to maintain it’s artistic integrity. This film helped catapult Myers’ film career as he later went on to star in many successful comedy films. Be sure to catch this classic on your satellite tv.
Recently though, SNL has spawned more box-office failures (that generally were considered failures by critics as well) than successes. Coneheads, Wayne’s World 2, It’s Pat, Stuart Saves His Family, A Night at the Roxbury, Superstar, The Ladies Man, and Blues Brothers 2000 were all directly based off of highly-successful SNL sketches but all became big failures with critics and audiences as they were transformed into films. Additionally, many other successful comedy films have highly influenced by SNL such as Office Space, A Mighty Wind, Spinal Tap, and Bob Roberts, even though they weren’t directly adapted from SNL sketches. You can find many of those films on several of your satellite tv channels. So whether or not MacGruber will be successful is still yet to be seen, but hopefully even if it isn’t hilarious, the special effects from all the explosions in high definition will make the film worth seeing. Whether you find these comedies enjoyable or not, one thing is clear, Saturday Night Live has had a deep and profound impact on American comedy films over the last 20 years.

Saturday Night Live – 25th Anniversary $7.03 Like many of the clips that make up the bulk of its content, the Saturday Night Live 25th Anniversary special suffers from that malady specific to almost every SNL sketch: it starts out brilliantly, loses steam about halfway through, then slowly but gamely limps to the finish line with occasional spurts of humor. This special (which actually marks the show’s 24th anniversary, but never you mind ab… |

Road to Wellville [VHS] $14.95 This wrong-headed adaptation of the very funny (and scatological) novel by T. Coraghessan Boyle was written and directed by Alan Parker, who doesn’t seem to have much of a clue. It’s not a botch, just a movie that hammers its efforts at humor too hard. The focus is split between three story lines: the life of cereal tycoon John Kellogg (Anthony Hopkins with buck teeth), who has created a health sp… |

Wayne’s World $2.98 TV’s Saturday Night Live has been like the evil twin of the legendary alchemist’s stone, which supposedly could turn lead into gold. SNL usually does the opposite, taking rich comic premises from short skits and extrapolating them into overblown and unfunny full-length films. (“The Coneheads”? Puh-leeze!) But this film proved to be the exception, thanks to Mike Myers’s wonderfully rude lowbrow hum… |
