Daniel Barenboim

Daniel Barenboim
Have you heard about Daniel Barenboim getting the Otto-Hahn Peace Medal?

If you didn’t know, Barenboim, one of my favorite pianists, was awarded the Otto-Hahn Peace Medal four days ago, which is really exciting! Can any classical contributors give me any opinions on this? Do you think he deserved it? Why or why not?

Of course he deserves it, but he himself will be as sad and melancholy that his ‘partner in crime’ whose inspiring thinking created the West-Eastern Divan, attempting to unite Palestinian and Israeli artists into a single orchestra, the great cultural thinker Edward Said, cannot be there to share it with him, having succumbed to pernicious anaemia, so sadly, meanwhile.

The idea of these two was and is completely **inspired**, and the resulting ensemble has triumphed in demonstrating *how* inspired.

Awarding the prize is a no-brainer. Who, in their wildest, could ever remotely even dream of objecting to it? These two men *did* something, where others merely talked, and effectively as a by-product of their idealism, created a professional body of musicians in an orchestra that will live its own life into the future on the basis of their communal excellence demonstrated, regardless. Now that *is* a great achievement.

All the best,

Daniel Barenboim – Moonlight sonata – 3ºmov Presto agitato
