AAAAAAARRRR! Why do we love pirates so?
Recently the news seems to be filled with news about piracy. Whether it be actual modern day piracy on the high seas, to ‘file sharing’ site pirate bay’s owners being found guilty of internet piracy over movies and mp3s. Whatever the reason we seem to be in a full on love of pirates. So what exactly has caused this ‘pirate love fest’?
Well the pirates of the Carribean films have helped this popularity for pirates, Johnny Depp as ‘Cap’n Jack Sparrow’ has definetley boosted the profile and imagination of a time where there was terror on the high seas. Seeing as POTC was a Disney movie alongs comes the masses of merchandise they like to crank out with any film. ‘Pirate metal’ has appeared, the band Alestorm seeming to find the right mix of heavy guitar and pirate vocals to bring a new musical subgenre to the forefront, which has only hightened peoples love of pirates. Theres also an obsession online about the fight to end all fights: Pirates vs zombies vs ninjas, as if any of these groups could actually get together for it. Does this obbsession steam from wanting escapism from our lives? We go to work in offices and shops, nothing near as exciting as sailing the oceans, boarding other pirate ships and drinking rum all day long, and as our economy takes a further nose dive and things seem bleaker, people seem to find the need to disapear into a pirate filled fantasy. Most of us, given the choice of piracy or the current economy would don a pirate hat and set sail for gold and treasure.
So what was the reality, rather than the ‘dream’? Life on ship could often see the food supplies going rotten, injured pirates having limbs amputated without any painkillers, often dying of any injuries substained in battle. Lashes with a ‘cat of nine tails’ is alot more painful than it sounds. So called for the nine ends of the whip, causing as much damage as it could to people.
Does a sailing weekend or a treasure hunt in London now appeal to ye still?
