Save The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau Before The Money Is Gone
The conservative majority in the U.S. House of Representatives appears determined to rain on Elizabeth Warren and the CFPB, reports the Huffington Post. The numbers are beginning to look grim, as the GOP House majority led by Eric Cantor, Bachmann and Spencer Bachus have slashed the CFPB budget almost in half, from $ 143 million to $ 80 million. At this rate, if the CFPB does manage to open as prepared on July 21, 2011, it could be as the first federal financial institution regulator to have suffered through political spending budget cuts. Consumer Financial Protection Bureau helps customers out a bit
The book “Two-Income Trap” was co-authored by Harvard Law Prof. Elizabeth Warren. She studied how United States families have been abused by the banking system. It seems the middle class is slowly dropping down to the poor classes. To be able to make up for lost salaries and to pay bills, these families have to borrow. The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau’s goal is to unify the following seven federal agencies, per the Federal Register:
- First there is the Federal Reserve Board of Governors
- Also integrated is the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation
- This contains the Federal Trade Commissioned
- The National Credit Union Administration is one of these
- There is the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency
- The Office of Thrift Supervision is next
- The seventh is the Department of Housing and Urban Development
Until now, none of these agencies had customer protection as the primary agenda. Warren believes the middle class needs an advocate, and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau will serve to help stem the tide of personal bankruptcies.
“The numbers are sobering,” Warren said at a Feb. 23 Chicago lecture. “Since the late 1970s, (personal) bankruptcy filings have doubled and doubled again. Women have been hit particularly hard. Over the course of 20 years, the number of women filing bankruptcy petitions increased by 662 percent. By the early 2000s, a woman was more likely to file for bankruptcy than to graduate from college.”

Things such as charge cards with high interest rates, financial institution overdraft loans which have high rates of interest, military loan corporations that try to get over the 36 percent APR cap that is federally mandates, and payday advance loan outlets with extra fees can be protected against with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau , states the Consumer Federation of The United States. Reuters’ author John Wasik wrote for the Prism Money blog. Here he said that the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau and what House Republicans are doing with it should be something customers take note of.
“I believe everyone with a credit card, bank loan or savings account needs to back Warren now,” writes Wasik. “Contact your senators and congressmen and urge them to leave the bureau’s funding alone, which is tied directly to the budget of the Federal Reserve.”
