Driven Dvd

How to make a dvd drive work on my laptop?
I have 2 old Dell Latitude laptops. Both have Windows XP.One was mine and it still works perfectly. The other was my son’s and it’s as dead as a doornail. My son’s computer had a DVD drive module and I removed it and exchanged it for my CD rom module but it won’t play DVDs because something wasn’t loaded into my laptop. I don’t have the software to do that, where can I get it?
They drive works and recognises CDs and DVD content (even if it won’t play movies)?
Then all you need is a DVD player software package.
For a free one then go to http://www.altools.com/image/alshow.exe
or go to the VLC player download at
http://www.videolan.org/mirror-geo.php?file=vlc/1.0.5/win32/vlc-1.0.5-win32.exe
NOTE: both these links will go straight to download the .exe file directly from the vendors website so save the file and when complete scan for viruses to be sure BEFORE running the install.
If the drive does not recognise the DVD content then in Control Panel -> System -> Device Manager in the DVD and CD ROM drives remove the device, shut-down the laptop, physically remove the device and reboot. Check the Device Manager to make sure the device is not listed if it is remove it again and shut-down once more, re-install the drive and reboot. Windows should find the device and its Plug and Play components, re-write the registry links for it and hopefully all will be well. To play DVDs you will still need a software package.
