Panic Attacks Help – Do You Always Need a Doctor?
By definition, panic attacks are episodes of overwhelming fear that cause both psychological distress as well as wide array of physical symptoms. If not properly treated, panic attacks can lead to other complications such as depression, alcohol or drug abuse, difficulty at work at school, restricted social interactions, phobias, such as fear of leaving home or being in public places, and more. Preventing these complications is why it’s important to know that help for panic attacks is available.
Although all healing is ultimately self-healing, it’s unusual for someone to be able to deal with a severe anxiety disorder on their own. At the very least they would do better with some guidance from someone knowledgeable about the problem and it’s treatment, even if that guidance comes in the form of a book, DVD or training program.
Very commonly, people will seek the advice of their doctor and possibly a psychotherapist as they come to terms with their anxiety problem.
At some point, someone with panic attacks should have a thorough evaluation by their physician to know for sure that they don’t have a medical problem causing their symptoms. Once that’s is known for sure they can focus on dealing with the anxiety issues.
A physician will often prescribe medications to help deal alleviate the anxiety, especially in the beginning. Drugs aren’t the complete answer and they do not remove the need for other treatments, but they frequently give some immediate relief while longer-term therapy has a chance to take effect.
The other aspect of help for anxiety problems is some form of counseling or psychotherapy. Some physicians do this, while others may recommend that you see a therapist. Most experts suggest that cognitive behavioral therapy is the most effective form of psychotherapy currently used.
Cognitive behavior therapy is based on the premise that most of our emotional distress is caused by distorted perceptions. If we see the world more clearly, the psychological discomfort gradually dissolves. Such methods have been very effective in helping anxiety disorders.
