How to Choose a Yoga DVD
While yoga is quite beneficial, for numerous reasons, many people simply are not comfortable in a class with other people. While private yoga sessions are typically available, many people cannot afford the rates that are charged. This leaves us with one other option – purchasing a Yoga DVD that we can use privately, in our own homes.
Unfortunately, there are many bad yoga DVDs out there. Not only are some of them bad, some of them are actually dangerous – especially for beginners. You need to use as much caution in selecting a good yoga DVD as you would in selecting a good yoga class or yoga instructor.
Before making a purchase of a yoga DVD, check to see if there is a free trial DVD, or a free online video, so that you can get a good sense of what you can expect from the DVD that you purchase. Most of the better Yoga DVD courses do include some type of free video, because they fully believe in their product.
Find out who the instructor on the video is, and check them out online. Find out if they are a member of the Yoga Alliance. Find out what experience they have, and see if there are any complaints concerning the instructor or the DVD before making a purchase. Also, make absolutely sure that you are getting the DVD that is specifically designed for true yoga beginners. Don’t worry about sets that include intermediate or advanced yoga at this point. Just concentrate on a beginner’s DVD.
Check the return policy, in the event that you are not satisfied with the DVD after receiving it. Ideally, you will have at least thirty days to return it for a full refund. It’s even better if you have sixty days, as this gives you the opportunity to truly try out the DVD instruction to see if it works well for you.
Before you purchase your yoga DVD, find out what other equipment you may need, such as a yoga mat or Dyna-Bands. Some yoga DVDs includes the use of small hand weights. Know what you need, and determine whether this is the type of yoga that you want to do.
Finally, do your research and understand the style of yoga that you wish to practice. There are different styles, and you will want to make sure that your yoga DVD is teaching you that particular style of yoga that you think you will prefer.
