The backbone behind many gay films is the repression that is felt by individuals. The negative connotations associated with being gay means that many persons would rather lie or suppress their feelings that be misunderstood. By doing so, this can lead to problems such as depression, and cause a tremendous lack of self-esteem for the individual.
Individuals that are completely aware of their preferences but are steadfast in their desires against admittance, the inclusion of this “heterosexual” individual can be expected. Often, another homosexual individual who has come to terms and has accepted who they are will help this character to find their true selves.
Many gay films focus upon the process of coming out. These often have protagonists who are struggling with their sexual orientation, for example. Indeed, even on the internet, one can find plenty of gay coming out videos.
Attempts to showcase the “homosexual lifestyle” of gay men and women are not always beneficial to their overall image. Some films will show a stereotypical image that fails to fully realize the life of a homosexual, most of whom live just the same as heterosexual individuals.
By normalizing the feelings of a homosexual person, it is made to seem more natural and believable by skeptics, who desire a viewpoint on the confusion and awkwardness of such a preference. Films go through many stages of character development emotionally, and for gay characters in these films it is important that each stage be shown effectively and with as much natural ability as possible.
The impact of gay films is apparent in modern society. As more of these films are released, their message of peace and tolerance resonating with more viewers. This is important if homosexuals are to be understood as normal individuals, who simply desire acceptance by others.
