Is Leonardo Dicaprio’s Gangs of New York a good film? Is it too violent?

I want to buy Leonardo Dicaprio’s Gangs of New York DVD, was it a good film, is it too violent as the horror movie Saw? Because Im planning to watch it with friends who cant stand that much gore and violence.
I admit I was never a big fan of Dicaprio but then I saw The Departed and Blood Diamond, the man can act, so if you know any other great films by Leonardo let me know

The movie is pretty good. It is directed by Martin Scorsese so you know you have a good script, story and atmosphere. As for the violent part i think it’s acceptable for every taste. There is no unnecessary violence when it comes it’s needed to tell the story. Dicaprio did a god job.
