English White Terrier A.k.a. Old English Terrier

Terriers, also known as earth dogs have existed in Great Britain as early as the 18th century. Not formally classified; these small dogs were generally called terriers. For years, these dogs have existed without being formally classified into distinct breeds. The dogs were only categorized according to appearance and place of origin.

Classification of terriers into distinct breeds occurred in the middle of 1800s when dog shows become popular. Dog owners have started “creating” new breeds from the already existing types of terriers. To gain the attention of dog enthusiasts, these new breeds were given interesting fictional histories. A terrier type that is already in existence was given the name English White Terrier and introduced as a new breed.

The English White Terrier is a small dog weighing about 12 to 20 lbs. The smooth white coat, the flat skull on the wedge shaped head as well as the muzzle that tapers to the black nose distinguishes this terrier from other breeds of terriers. Bright black eyes are oval in shape and set fairly close. It has been the custom of English White Terrier owners to crop the perfectly erect ears of the dog. An English White Terrier’s tail is moderate in length, thick at the base and tapers to a point.

Dog lovers were robbed of the chance to know the English White Terrier as this breed that is also known as Old English Terriers has completely slipped into extinction. Terriers are also called earth dogs because of their propensity to follow the prey in their burrows underground. These tenacious hunters have high prey drive that will not allow foxes, vermin and other animals to escape even in their burrows. English White Terriers are delicate and fragile dogs thus they are not very good hunters that can follow the prey in their burrows. This breed did not become a sports enthusiast’s companion. This breed though has excelled in the show ring.

An English White Terrier has the propensity for partial and total deafness thus they never make good hunters and working dogs. English White Terriers though make good lap dogs. These are affectionate dogs that would love to be hugged and cuddled. The genetic disorder as well as the lack of utilization has caused the extinction of this breed. The English White Terrier is now an extinct breed but it has left an important legacy. A number of present day terrier breeds have descended from the English White Terrier. The English White Terrier has completely vanished but the Fox Terrier, the Parson Russell Terrier, the Jack Russell Terrier, and the Sealyham Terriers are believed to have developed from this white coated ancient terrier breed.
