Snow and Ice Disruption
A few days of cold weather accompanied by some short but intense snowfall have wreaked havoc in the United Kingdom.
In some of the worst hit parts of the country roads are littered with abandoned cars. Many were attempting to retrieve their vehicles as temperatures began to increase a little today. There have been reports that a high number of people have spent the night trapped in their cars in freezing temperatures.
There has been a lot of disruption to public transport with bus and train services cancelled and many flights also cancelled. High speed Eurostar trains that run between London and Paris have been breaking down due to snow getting into the power systems. Around 2000 passengers were stranded for up to 16 hours in the tunnel beneath the English Channel. Some passengers have experienced panic attacks and there have been some cases of extreme claustrophobia prompting some to leave their trains and attempt to walk to a station.
Eurostar have now begun to resume operation of their high speed trains after three days with no service. They now have huge passenger backlogs to deal with in both France and the UK.
The National Health service has told people to stay at home unless their journey is essential. Hospitals have reported unprecedented numbers of people injured as a result of falling on icy pavements.
Since Chrstmas is only a few days away many are forced to venture into their nearby towns to carry out their essential shopping. This is forcing people to leave their homes and venture forth onto treacherous pavements.
Many are already discussing how well and how badly the UK has coped in this latest wave of bad winter weather. While main roads were quickly treated with grit and salt many smaller side roads remained untreated and most pavements and footpath were completely untreated.
Back in February 2009 the UK spent several weeks in sub-zero arctic temperatures that wreaked havoc on transportation disrupted schools and work for many people. This latest bought of bad weather is prompting many to ask if the UK is really capable of dealing with cold winter weather.
