Is it okay to write short or feature film screenplays right now, during the WGA writers’ strike?
I went to film school, I love writing, I want to write.
But I support the WGA, their strike and hope someday to be a member (if life takes me down that path).
That being said what should I do if I am currently very inspired to write screenplays? Can I write them and just wait until much later (after the strike at least) to shop them? Or should I be full fledged supporting the strike and not writing at all? Help!
You’re free to write. If you’re a guild member you are not permitted to seek work as a writer under a guild contract (some are working as writers in other fields, which is permissable) or complete work already contracted under WGA rules.
As someone who is not a guild member yet, you’re free to keep working on your own material. I would recommend not submitting it until the strike is over.
