Why does my computer think my DVD-writer is a CD-ROM drive??
I have had my computer for over a year. Ive used the DVD writer drive many times and with many different programs. I keep my computer up to date and have great virus protection and firewall. But recently for no reason, my computer reads the DVD-writer drive as just a CD-drive. I have tried updating, uninstalling reinstalling, system restore, etc etc. Im using the right disks, everything. Basically it just reads it wrong. I mostly use it to make DVD movies with Windows Movie Maker and never had a problem before. But now I receive an error message stating the disc format is not supported even though Ive used it before. When I look in Windows Explorer when there is no disk in there it identifies it as DVD-RW. But when I put the correct disk in it identifies it as CD-Drive. Yet when I copy one DVD onto another DVD it works fine! And on top of all this, when Ive finally just given up, it works again! It has a mind of its own. Any advice or solutions would be great!

when the lens detects a disc but cannot identify it, it displays an empty cd rom
Try one of two
upgrade the dvd-drive firmware. (easy if it is a sony or lg drive)
or remove form pc, open it, remove the dvd drive cover, look at the lense case, remove the plastic top, besides the lense you will see a lilttle screw, it locks the lense to the reader head, turn it a lil so it become a little more loose (not so much that the lense dgoes up and down whotut control
That procedure is made just to let the lense rise up on the reading/writing process a little more, because is getting old, and the laser distance is not the same good as new
if you don´t understand something, apply common sense
the screw tightens the lense, as more as you turn it out the more the lense rise ups beneath (closer to) the disc. I repeat not so loose that the lense goes withpout control beacuse it may damage your discs.
Obviously I’ve had on mind that about all you’ve done, it is not a pc problem, the problem is on the drive. firmware or lens.
