How do I handle accepting a possible job offer if another one is offered before I find out about the first.?
I interviewed for two positions on the same day. I’m supposed to hear from one very soon (first) and the other one in a week or so(second). I’m not guaranteed either obviously. I really want the second one. If I get offered the first one do I take it and reject the other one completely. Or do I take it and ask to start after I’m supposed to find out about the second. Or is there a third and better option.
If the first employer calls and makes you an offer, you can say that you’re expecting an offer from another employer. This can go either way – either they will offer you a better deal, or they will choose someone else.
Usually what happens is that you have to come in for a second interview. It can take weeks to hear back from either place. It would be acceptable to tell the second employer, the one you like better, that you interviewed with another place first and that you’re leaning in their direction. If they like you, they might give you a little hint about how seriously they are considering you.
It’s bad form to accept a job offer and then take another job at the last minute. It means they have to start over and try to get someone else. Then sometimes the second offer evaporates and you’re left with neither. I was hired at a job once that went out of business six weeks later. It’s best never to burn your bridges.
