Gabriel Byrne

What is your take on Gabriel Byrne’s hat in the Coen Brothers’ classic film “Miller’s Crossing”?
Even after a savage beating for ‘welshing’ on bets,he can still spit out..”Where’s me hat ? (Kind of like that plastic bag blowing about in “American Beauty”..But this has a different slant.. ( Ahh Yes !!! The Dude Abides…)
I thought it was a brilliant detail in one of my favorite films off all time!
I always thought of it as a symbol of a certain level of decency that the main characters believed in, which was the main ironic theme of the film. They talked about honor and loyalty and showing respect as they went about their cutthroat ruthless ways. A man with a hat looks respectable. But if you put a hat on a thug, does that really make him respectable? In the way these guys think, YES!
So, even when Byrnes’ character gets the stuffing beaten out of him, he picks up his hat and puts it on his head and goes about thinking of himself as a man worthy of respect.
And really, although he talks about just looking out for himself, he really is a loyal guy.
Gabriel Byrne does his best Jedward impression!
