Why Did Gary oldman Try To Get Out Of Making The Dark Knight?

I read or heard a rumour that he tried to get out of making the film but his contract wouldn’t allow it, so will he be in the 3rd film or will someone take over

They don’t really reveal in detail why he tried to get out of it; the only reason I can think of is that he didn’t want to be bogged down with one character. Oldman is a prolific actor, and he has never been involved in a franchise as big as the Batman films, so it’s understandable why he would be reluctant to stay in the same character for 2 or 3 more films.
