Are there any problems with buying a laptop in the US for general use in Europe, ie dvd compatability etc?
I was also wondering about the charge system as the us use 110v 60hz and Europe 220v 50hz
most laptops are fitted with a universal PSU, at least form the major laptop vendors. it is a thing to check, but in any event its not a big issue
places like Tesco sell replacement PSU’s.. around £20..30
places like Maplin sell replacememnt PSU’s, and step down transformers (that will convert 220vAC to 110vAC which should be OK for a laptop PSU.
Most modern laptops run on either 15 or 18v PSU’s
the keyboard layout will be US, but that isn’t neccesarily and issue…. you could tell the computer to use a UK keyboard layout, even though the keys are pritned for US keyboards. The only real problem is some of the punctuation, bracketing and sunfry jeys are moved around. the pound £ sumbol is shift 3. If you don’t need to use the poiund symbol that often, then Id tell the computer it was in UK, use a US keyboard, and insert the pound symbol using alt + 0163
the warranty is a problem, virtually no manufacturer will honour a warranty int he UK on a US PC, they would have difficulties trying to do that with an EU sourced machine, but not outsdie the EU. You woudl need to return the computer to the original supplier.
Spares and repairs, although laptops are made be very few companies (most are rebadged), and used common components its possible you may struggle to get replacement parts for a US laptop. The obvious stuff like disk drives, memory etc will be freely available, other stiff, like cases, trackpads etc may be a biot of a problem
