The play is based off of the series by P.L. Travers. The book for the musical was written by Julian Fellows. He was won an Oscar for the film script Gosford Park. Brothers Richard M. and Robert B. Sherman wrote the original songs and Lyrics for Mary Poppins and won Academy Awards for their work on the movie. Their other work includes the song “It’s a Small World” and music from Chitty Chitty Bang Bang. George Stiles and Anthony Drewe added new songs, and Drewe added new lyrics. Stiles and Drewe have worked together before on shows like Just So, Tutankhamun, Honk!, and Peter Pan.
Ashley Brown plays Mary Poppins and debuted on Broadway in the part of Belle in Beauty and the Beast. She is accompanied by Gavin Lee as Bert. Although this is Lee’s first show on Broadway, he was in many shows at London’s West End including Crazy For You, Peggy Sue Got Married, Oklahoma! and Over My Shoulder. He originated the role of Bert in the London production. Daniel Jenkins and Rebecca Luker play Mr. and Mrs. Banks. Jenkins has been seen on Broadway in shows like Angels in America and Big. Luker was also on Broadway before in productions like Sound of Music and Phantom of the Opera. They are joined by multiple talented actors for Mary Poppins.
