What do you think of the whole Harry Connick Jr. incident?

At first, I was %100 on his side because I thought “Hey, that skit was really racist”.
But then when I saw that he himself did a “blackface” routine a while ago, that made me think “Oh wait a minute… That was really hypocritical of him then!”.
I don’t know… could you make an argument that it’s “OK” for him to do it because he grew up in New Orleans? I wouldn’t.
I really like Harry Connick Jr., but I don’t like this whole mess.

It was little more than a cultural misunderstanding.

The blackening of the face has a completely different cultural meaning in the US than it does in Australia. But Connick, being an American, could not help interpreting the skit from an American point of view.

I think what really caused the problem was re-visiting the issue later in the show. Harry Connick had already made his discomfort clear immediately after the act. The matter should have been left there. Choosing to bring the topic up again later merely served to give the issue more importance than it deserved and resulted in all the pointless furore.
