Bumper Month For Rubiks Cube News Has World In Spin

The Rubik’s Cube. In its 30th anniversary year, this multicoloured icon of pop culture is being thrown around entertainment sections everywhere (rather than being thrown against the wall, as is traditional). With 350 million frustration cubes sold worldwide, there’s suddenly attention on the toy for a bizarre reason. Whilst the Rubik’s cube license has been shopped around various manufacturers in the last decade, especially to those making Branded Clothing, the word on the street is that the Rubik’s cube is about to get its own movie.

Yes, really.

The word from Hollywood insiders is that CAA, a powerful talent agency, as been approaching studios and looking for a buyer for the apparently valuable franchise. CAA represent George Clooney, Meryl Streep and Brad Pitt, so the star potential of the movie could be potentially significant. Shame the storylines being vomited out of their Branded pens so far have seemed a little on the weak side: an Erno Rubik biopic would hardly have the ups and downs of ‘The Social Network’ and current concepts seem to float around the idea of a Rubik’s cube tournament. Now, there’s the potential for some kind of so bad it’s good Karate Kid-ripoff. All they’d need is a Hungarian Rubik’s master to show the troubled lead the true meaning of family and turbo-twisting through menial labour, but even that would seem a little clever for Hollywood right now. Ooh! Ooh! How about John Travolta in a series of cube-based Dance Dance Revolution-style dance offs in some kind of alternate universe 80s utopia. Better than Battlefield Earth or your money back..

Rubik’s Revenge II: Attack of the Cubes won’t even be the stupidest movie license to be bought up by Hollywood. Pac-Man rights were purchased by Crystal Sky in 2008, but the resulting LSD-fueled hysteria movie never actually surfaced. Hollywood must be in real trouble here creatively. ‘Brand’ is clearly everything, and they’re no longer content with their promotional clothing sales, but selling movies themselves on the name alone.

Warner Brothers Home Entertainment Academy Awards Animation Collection – 15 Winners, 26 Nominees

$9.93

The Oscar for Animated Short Film has been a useful if not entirely accurate gauge of the state of American animation, as this three-disc set demonstrates. The Academy created the category in the early ’30s to honor Walt Disney’s contributions to the art form. But most of the films in the collection date from the ’40s and ’50s, when Warner Bros. and MGM artists won most of the Oscars for pushing t…

$18.29

Review for A Fistful of Dollars:A Fistful of Dollars launched the spaghetti Western and catapulted Clint Eastwood to stardom. Based on Akira Kurosawa’s 1961 samurai picture Yojimbo, it scored a resounding success (in Italy in 1964 and the U.S. in 1967), as did its sequels, For a Few Dollars More and The Good, the Bad and the Ugly. The advertising campaign promoted Eastwood’s character–laconic, am…

Monty Python's Life Of Brian - The Immaculate Edition [Blu-ray]

Monty Python’s Life Of Brian – The Immaculate Edition [Blu-ray]

$9.85

“Blessed are the cheesemakers,” a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python’s Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers–it’s an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy–things that that fellow from Nazareth didn’t…
