How do I hook up a DVD recorder to record from my saved list on TiVo?

I’ve tried using coaxial and AV jacks and it still won’t record from the TiVo. When I first hooked it up, it worked fine, then TiVo upgraded and now it won’t record from the TiVo anymore. I’ve hooked the cable input into the TiVo, the DVD recorder, and even the TV and no combination worked. I went to the website, but their method didn’t work either. Right now I have it hooked up with both coaxial and AV jacks, the satellite input is running into the TiVo- you hit record and it records a black screen and not what’s playing. Help! We’ve got over 30 hours of stuff on the playlist that neither of us wants to send into oblivion!

I noticed you said that you have the SATELLITE connection going Directly into the Tivo. “the satellite input is running into the TiVo- you hit record and it records a black screen and not what’s playing”.

My question is WHAT kind of Tivo do you have? Tivo Standalone Units cannot do Satellite connections directly from the satellite dish. a Standalone Tivo would first need the satellite cables going into a receiver and then into the Tivo. Even with the NEW Tivo units that work on DIGITAL channels. For instance DirecTV ONLY uses ALL digital channels and the signals are ENCRYPTED. Tivo Standalone units CANNOT decode the encrytion signal.

Now if this is a DirecTV Tivo then this is a different story, it IS made for the SATELLITE connection going directly into it. The DirecTV Tivo is not just a DVR but is also a receiver, they are called “Combo DVR’s” for this reason. The Tivo brand that are NOT made with DirecTV are called “Standalone DVR’s” and they are NOT receivers, so they CANNOT decode the signals.

So to make a long story short IF you have a Tivo Standalone unit then you need to run the Satellite coaxial cable into a Dish/DirecTV Receiver first. Then you need to run another Coaxial Cable from the Receiver’s OUTPUT into the Tivo’s INPUT. You will also need to use a IR cable from the Tivo into the Satellite receivers IR input, this is so that the Tivo can change the channel on the receiver to whatever channel you have the Tivo set to record. Then you can run another Coaxial Cable, or S-Video Cable and RCA Audio Cable, or RCA Audio and Video Cables from the back of the Tivo to the INPUT on your TV.

If I am missing something here please feel free to send me an email with ALL the details of what is going on, how it all is connected, which brand Tivo unit you have, which satellite provider you are using, and any other details..I will try my best to help you figure this out..
