Ridiculous Hollywood Pool Parties
Take up any batch of comedy films and it won’t be long till you get the Swimming pool pumps fired up for a poolside shindig. Here are three of the best pool party scenes.
Caddyshack
In one of the most hilariously puerile movie moments, a stray Baby Ruth chocolate bar gets dropped into an outdoor swimming pool causing mass panic. Not exactly standard among Swimming Pool Accessories. Spoofing the 1975 Summer Blockbuster Jaws, this scene boomerangs back for an settling encore. When the pool is later drained, Bill Murray’s character Carl Spackler enjoys a nutty snack.
Jesus Christ Superstar
Easily one of the most obscure scenes in this often bizarre reinterpretation of the Easter story, the rock-opera takes a hugely camp detour to see King Herod. The Messiah barely knows what to make of Herod and his oiled bare-chest. His entourage is similar (un)attired with bright hotpants and afro-wigs. There’s probably something funny in the Swimming Pool Chemicals. Productions at all levels usually use this version as the blueprint. School productions in particularly can’t seem to break out of this particular mold, and many a camp college student has been encouraged to go wild for this one. It also has one of the musical’s more trite rhymes: ‘Prove to me that you’re no fool, walk across my swimming pool’.
Anchorman
30 years later, Anchorman riffed on the same 70s machismo campiness. Will Ferrell’s hilarious Ron Burgundy holds pool parties to impress his contacts, displaying a complete lack of self-awareness. Endlessly quotable, it’s a celebration of all things party animal, not least because so many modern comedy frat-boys are on board. Nearly the entire Frat Pack is here: Will Ferrell, Vince Vaughn, Luke Wilson, Ben Stiller and Jack Black, all in one film with only Owen Wilson missing. Add in names like Seth Rogen and Steve Carell and you’ve got yourself one hell of a Hollywood fancy dress party.
