Recovering partition in case of ‘Missing operating system’ error in Windows XP
In a hard disk, partitioning is the term that defines dividing the storage space of hard disk into various logical drives, which are referred as partitions. Using partitioning, you can ensure that the system files and the program files are separated by the user data. This would mean that the system drive has enough space to perform virtual memory paging and swapping. Also, when one of the partitions get corrupted then other partitions do not get affected by this. Corruption in partitions can happen due to various reasons such as virus infections, power outages, faulty hardware components, damaged file system, etc. You should use appropriate steps to resolve this issue. However, if you are unable to do then you should use a third-party partition recovery software to recover partition.
Consider a scenario wherein you are switch on your Windows XP-based system, but it fails to boot. An error message is displayed, that is any of the following messages:
Operating system not found
Missing Operating System
Cause:
For the aforementioned error messages, there could be the following reasons:
The disk is not detected by the BIOS (Basic Input/Output System)
An incompatible partition is marked as Active.
The Sector 0 of the physical hard disk has a corrupt Master Boot Record (MBR).
The system drive partition containing the MBR is not active any more.
The hard disk is damaged.
Resolution:
To resolve this issue and to be able to access the system, you can use either of the following methods:
Verify the BIOS settings: You should verify the BIOS settings and check whether the hard disk is recognized by the system or not. If yes, then restart the system to check if the problem is resolved or not.
Use Recovery Console: You should access the Windows XP Recovery Console using the Windows XP CD-ROM. In this, use the fixmbr command to repair the master boot record (MBR) of the system drive partition.
However, if you are still facing the same problems then you should use a third-party Windows partition recovery software to recover Windows partition. Such read-only tools use fast yet sophisticated scanning algorithms to scan the damaged area.
