Se7en – Fincher’s Excellent Crime Drama
Se7en is a brilliant film that I finally got around to watching last night, after it moved up on my IMDb Watchlist.
For those of you that don’t know, it’s a Brad Pitt/Morgan Freeman picture directed by the always excellent David Fincher.
The story focuses around a serial-killer who uses the seven deadly sins as a means and a method for murdering his victims.
At just over two hours, I cautiously went into the film expecting a decent picture that perhaps dragged on in one or two places, but I was pleasantly surprised.
The pace of the film is executed extremely well and never once did I feel that my attention was drifting.
A mysterious atmosphere was continuous but it didn’t keep you guessing on questions for too long, which I think is a strength.
It is a not a typical ‘who is the murderer?’ film, where the killer is exposed at the final scene as a bit-part character from earlier parts of the film.
The killer is uncovered in a more realistic way than other films. He isn’t some super human with the ability to avoid the authorities despite possessing nothing more than a psychotic mind; he is very real and I think that’s a key factor in how enjoyable the film was for me.
Brad Pitt and Morgan Freeman are of course fantastic actors and you don’t need to hear me lavish praise upon them. They met their usual high standards without doing anything revolutionary in the process.
Gwyneth Paltrow plays David Mills (Pitt) wife, and does a good job in the few scenes she had.
But it was Kevin Spacey that stole the show for me; it’s not a spoiler to tell you that he plays the killer. He plays the psychopathic, religious and philosophical murderer to perfection in my eyes.
There is a scene towards the end of the film involving his character (known only as John Doe), Detective David Mills and Detective Lt. William Somerset (Freeman) that really drew me in, the dialogue in these moments was head and shoulders above the rest of the film.
Overall I’d say this was one of the better crime dramas that I have seen, and it was great to see such a good cast to pull off a well-written script with an incredible director attached.
I’d recommend this film to anyone who’s a fan of films of this genre, or even if you’re just a fan of Pitt, Freeman or Spacey.
