Walking Holidays in Peru

You may not have thought about taking a walking holiday in Peru before but it is a popular option which many people on active holidays enjoy taking part in every year. As far as walking holidays go the Inca Trail up to the famous Mayan ruin of Machu Picchu has to be one of the world’s best. You will find that although there are many high altitude and exhilarating treks worldwide none compare to the mystic walk to Machu Picchu. The path is part of a 500 year old road that crisscrosses some of the world’s highest mountains.

A multi purpose fortress and temple Machu Picchu would be a wonder even at ground level. 4,000 feet up on a mountain side to build a temple is quite a tough thing to do so you can only imagine how difficult this was back in the time of the Mayan reign.

It is a 40 mile walk that never goes below 8,500 feet and for huge sections of the walk you will find yourself at 11,000 feet or above so do not be fooled into thinking this will be easy. The altitude may become a problem so try not to go at it too hard from the start as you may not be used to the thin air and you will become tired much quicker than usual. Don’t be too worried about the trek enjoy the rolling mountain sides as you ascend to the summit.

As mentioned before take care of yourself and if you start to feel dizzy sit down as there is no one medically trained to help you on the trail. The trail has been deemed too dangerous by authorities to go alone so all people wanting to do the trek are required to go as part of a guided group.

Peru holidays offer a great sense of adventure but if the multiple day trek sounds like a little bit much for you then there is always the train, which will take you from the nearest town of Cusco to Machu Picchu and back within a day.
