Before celebration, Spokane police defuse explosive device
There was a Martin Luther King Jr. Day parade happening in Spokane, Washington. MSNBC accounts that employees of the city of Spokane then found an explosive device there. The Spokane bomb was discovered by city employees, looking over the parade route a half hour before it was set to start. The city workers found an unattended backpack sitting on a metal bench. The Spokane Police were called because there were suspicious looking wires coming out of the backpack. The device was disposed of by the explosive device disposal unit that immediately got there. The parade had to be rerouted and was delayed because of this.
Lethal device
The FBI easily took over the investigation, and the agent in charge said the bomb was “viable” and might have been able to “inflict multiple casualties” had it gone off, in accordance with the Spokesman Review. The crowd would have had shrapnel blown into it depending on the way the bomb was positioned. It was facing marchers in the crowd. Two t-shirts were found within the backpack, one reading “Stevens County Relay for Life 2010″ and one reading “Treasure Island Spring Break 2009.”. The pipe explosive device found in the backpack, according to ABC, was rigged to be detonated remotely by radio.
Unknown details
It’s still unknown what the Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration bomb motivation was. Several people were going to be mortally wounded or hurt by the explosive device though. The Spokane and Northern Idaho area have been known to be home to hate groups, notably the Aryan Nations white supremacist group which was sued into bankruptcy as an organization several years back.
