Anything I can do to get ready for surfing?

I’ve wanted to surf for a long time, a really long time, but I live no where near water, can’t take the time away from work (yet), and right now I’m pretty damn out of shape. I can’t explain why, but I’m attracted to the ocean, the few times I’ve been to one, I just felt a whole new ease in life, and when I saw surfers (in Texas), I became interested in the lifestyle (though I don’t know much about it).

What I’m wondering is what kind of things can I do to get myself ready? I thought about getting a DVD or book or something that would maybe teach me little tips I can practice to get used to the moves (like popping up and paddling), but I don’t know if that stuff is a joke or not. Also I thought about buying a balance board that’s supposed to simulate surfing (kind-of), but that’s only because I have vertigo and I know balance training would help me significantly. Thanks for any help.

Unfortunately you will have to be in great shape to surf. You can practice developing your upper body strength with push-ups and your core strength with sit-ups. Also, do some cardio to get yourself in shape along with any other body sculpting excersizes. If you want to learn how to surf, your going to need an instructor for sure. You can’t go out there alone or you’ll get eaten by the waves. You can always practice your pop-up as well. Make sure you improve balance as well.
