When did the ‘Happy Christmas’ greeting become ‘Merry Christmas’?
It has come to my attention that we did not always wish friends a merry Christmas. 100 years ago it was almost exclusively ‘happy Christmas’. The original ending of The Night Before Christmas is “Happy Christmas to all and to all a good night”. Check it out. I was looking at some old Courier & Ives greeting cards; most of them said ‘happy ‘ not ‘merry’. I was watching a 1953 episode of Racket Squad. At the end when the fake Santa got busted he was telling some kids the night before Christmas and it was ‘happy Christmas to all’. When and why the switch?
Actually we (the USA) did until sometime after about WW I. Why did we change to ‘merry’?
Yes sir this is very interesting indeed. The change came about in 1971 when a dutch immigrant farmer living in Connecticut made massive profits that fall thus making him wealthy in the process. He had several lavish parties the week of Christmas themed “eat drink and be merry.” Soon after other socialites in New England began to follow suit, in order to “keep up with the jones’ “. It became the in thing to do.And the rest my friend is history.
