Robert Aldrich

How did you feel about the end of the movie “The dirty dozen” ?
Hi, I’m french and I’ve just watched “The dirty dozen”, with Lee Marvin, Charles Bronson, John Cassavetes.
At the end of the movie, they kill german officers that have taken refuge in a basement by throwing grenades and gasoline in air ducts. I felt really disturbed watching this, it really evoked to me Auschwitz and Zyklon B. It really looked like American trying to apply the “an-ey-for-an-eye” justice with Germans. Gross, to say the least.
I couldn’t undestand why director Robert Aldrich could shoot something this distateful. Was it on purpose ?
@LilYRT : There are women too.
frankly, i think you’re overthinking it. it was just supposed to be standard popcorn war flick. I guess I see the similarity as far methods. But, unlike auschwitz, the primary targets were german army officers, not innocent civilians–legitimate targets during war. they weren’t killing them for bloodlust or racial cleansing. they didn’t line up children. killing them increased the odds of success for the our side. it’s not really a fair comparison.
when I finished watching it, the only thing I was thinking was why the heck they didn’t cut telly savales’s character from the mission. without him, the rest had a chance of making it out alive.
EDIT: but the women aren’t the target unlike at auschwitz.
