How do I recover from a defective public library DVD movie disk, in my Dell Dimension 8400?
I am running Windows XP, with the latest Service Packs.
The DVD drive and software came with the Dell.
A defective DVD movie, in my DVD drive, causes my computer to freeze part way through the movie.
The start of the movie plays OK.
When I cold boot, and replay the DVD disk, the computer goes back to the defective part of the DVD disk, and the computer freezes again.
I can see what I think is the defect. It is a deep _circular_ scratch, perhaps caused by a head crash.
How can I restart to the first of the movie, so I can jump over the defective part on the DVD disk?
Or is the disk unusable beyond the scratch?
The movie is “His Girl Friday”, with Cary Grant and Rosalind Russell.

You could try the methods above or, if you dont mind not seing some of the movie (the scratched part) stop the disc completely, (using a different program might work), and then choose a chapter that you think is after the scratched part. Depending on how scratched it is this might not work, but then again it might.
