what happens to letters addressed to santa clause?

In the sprit of Christmas, if my children write a letter to Santa Clause and address it to North Pole or something, put a stamp on it, and put it in the mailbox, what happens to it?

ultimately I hate to say but it ends up in the local land fill. I am sure you where hoping to hear some great story of how all the letters children write to santa get read but they dont.
