Some Thoughts About Saturday Night Fever
Raise your hands, guys, if you go out looking for a wife on Saturday night. You don’t, do you? You definitely go out looking for girls, but you’re not looking for a lasting commitment. That’s not always the case with the girls, though.
Nothing is true for everyone, but in general we’re all alike. Guys generally don’t think about committing to a relationship until they’re head over heels in love. Before that, all they’ve got on their minds is sex, pure and simple. Ask a thousand single guys to raise their hands if they have ever given a single thought to solitaire engagement rings and not one will raise his hand.
Then go and ask a group of women if they have ever thought about princess cut engagement rings. Almost every girl has. Women, whether they like to admit it or not, want commitment from men. Men don’t want to think about it.
That men ever enter into a long term relationship with women is a clever trick of nature. Somehow, a one night stand turns into an obsession and a guy can’t live without her. He is willing to give up everything for just one woman and go the whole distance. It may be a form of madness, but it’s what makes life work.
You’ve got to remember that there was a time when women didn’t have access to birth control. If they had sex, the odds were that they would get pregnant. Therefore, they were very careful about their choice of partners and made the marital commitment their highest priority. While birth control has taken some of the pressure off, the ancient biological imperatives remain.
The mystery is why men don’t just take off when women get pregnant, but they don’t – at least not often. Even if you ignore the social taboos, men feel a gut sense that the baby is theirs as well and that they have to take care of it, even though a baby was the last thing on his mind when he was having sex.
Saturday nights are a big part of mating rituals that exist in all species throughout time. While girls sweatshirts were fine for lounging around the house by day, at night she takes out her sexiest outfit to go out on the town. The guys, who are most comfortable in jeans and a tee shirt, put on the clothes they think will make them look their best. Then they get together and flirt and dance. If everything goes to plan, they don’t go home alone.
One of these days, something’s going to happen to change all that. You’ll exchange your Saturday nights out on the town for a stint at changing the diapers. And you’ll like it. That’s just the way it works. Deal with it.
