When I watch a movie on Quick Time Player or Power DVD the screen is very dark . What can I do?

When I watch You.Tube and the like, the videos are very good. How come when I watch movies or videos on Power DVD or Quick Player the screen turns very dark?

The display adapter OVERLAY brightness settings need to be adjusted. OVERLAY stands for “Video Output” and controls only videos that are played on your computer. The web videos are streamed and of a different format which most likely are a different type of format. If your display adapter has advanced controls in the DISPLAY PROPERTIES, then you will look for the OVERLAY settings. Make sure you have a Quicklime movie on the screen while doing this or the OVERLAY adjustment controls will be grayed out. Once you find the OVERLAY adjustments, you can change the color, brightness and contrast etc.. , which will only effect the movie window and not the entire desktop. If you use the monitor or advanced display properties to brighten your monitor it will make your desktop too bright and may not effect the movies at all. I know ATI and NVidia both have a version of the OVERLAY adjustment control. If you cannot find it in your advanced display properties then you might try downloading the latest drivers for your display adapter and the manufacturer’s custom desktop or control panel to access these features.
