Set Laserdisc

Which should I get: laptop or Blu-ray player?
As a graduation gift, my family is willing to give me anything I ask for. So, right now, I have my mind set on either a laptop or a Blu-ray player? The problem with a laptop is now that I’m done with college, I’m not sure how much traveling I’ll be doing. So, I don’t know how useful a laptop will be now. The problem with a Blu-ray player is that it’s still a new technology and they’re still expensive. Plus, since it’s new, it may not be as successful as DVDs. It may be another laserdisc for all we know. So, that’s a gamble.
Keep in mind. I’ve never owned a laptop or Blu-ray player. So, which do you think is more practical to get?
Laptop is a lot more versatile. A Blu-ray player serves only one purpose. So you won’t be traveling. Nothing says you HAVE to use a desktop computer. Keep on using your laptop.
The big problem with Blu-ray players is that:
1. If the TV is not 1080p, then you don’t get the full benefit of the Blu-ray technology. 720p looks pretty good, but it’s still a big step down from 1080p.
2. Not all new releases are available in Blu-ray, which means you’ll be watching standard-def DVD’s that have been stepped up. An improvement, but still not even as good as 720p.
3. Older movies, even those on Blu-ray discs, were still mastered in standard-res, so they’re only marginally improved.
Blu-ray is still a gadget, a toy, something for people to want, but if it were as good as people THINK it is, it would be in higher demand, bringing down the price, and eliminating standard-def DVDs entirely. Blu-ray has a good future, but the future is not now.

Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever [VHS] $19.98 From Wikipedia: Motown 25: Yesterday, Today, Forever was a 1983 television special produced by Suzanne de Passe for Motown Records, to commemorate Motown’s twenty-fifth year of existence. (Motown was founded in January 1959, meaning that a twenty-fifth anniversary special should have aired in 1984, not 1983. One could argue that Gordy’s vision of what would become “Hitsville U.S.A.” was conceived … |
