All About The Chinese Lunar Calendar
A combined solar and lunar calendar, the Chinese Lunar Calendar has 12 months and determines its dates based on the cycles of the moon. Each 60 year cycle has a celestial stemm and a terrestrial branch with names of corresponding animals on the zodiac. This calendar dates back over 2000 years since 2637 BCE.
Legend has it that Buddha summoned all of the animals to pay their farewell to him before he left the earth. The animals that showed up, in the order they appeared to him, were rewarded for their respect and a year was named after them (i.e. 12 animal zodiac). The months are also closely associated with agriculture and are named after various fruits and flowers that are in season during the same months they are named after.
The first year of the Chinese lunar calendar is the year of the Rat. It is said that the rat tricked the other animals and he jumped into first position pushing the cat into the river making them enemies for all of time. People born in the years 1924, 1936, 1948, 1960, 1972, 1984 and 1996 are said to be very generous, charming and imaginative. They have a tendency to be quick tempered and critical and make good publicists, writers and critics. Some famous people born under this sign are Burt Reynolds, Englebert Humperdinck, Marlon Brando and Ron Moody.
The rooster is a sign that has traits of hard work and clear thinking. Born in the years 1933, 1945, 1957, 1969, 1981, 1993 and 2005, they are not afraid to speak what is on their minds and can come across as being braggarts. They tend to be world travellers and restaurant owners. Famous roosters are Eric Clapton, Mia Farrow, Rod Stewart, Yoko Ono and Michael Aspel.
The year of the dog people tend to show traits of faithfulness and honesty. Those born in the years 1934, 1946, 1958, 1970, 1982, 1994 and 2006 tend to worry and find fault. They make great business people and secret agents. Some famous dog people are Liza Minelli, Dolly Parton, Sylvia Sims, Shirley MacLain, Henry Cooper and Jane Asher.
Last but not least is the boar or the pig. People born in the years 1935, 1947, 1959, 1971, 1983, 1995 and 2007 are honest and make good friends. They tend to be tolerant and expect the same from others. They tend to be disappointed when people don’t live up to their standards. They are entertainers and do well in the arts. Some famous people born under this sign are Elton John, Dudley Moore, Gerry Rafferty, Bamber Gascoigne and David Bowie.
The Nationalist government adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1929 after they gained control over the Republic of China. The Peoples Republic of China has used the Gregorian calendar since 1949. Chinese New Year, Mid-Autumn Festival and most traditional festivals are celebrated according to the Chinese Lunar Calendar and is still used in traditional households, it is called the Imperial Calendar with both Gregorian and Chinese dates noted.

Monty Python’s Life of Brian [VHS] $1.50 “Blessed are the cheesemakers,” a wise man once said. Or maybe not. But the point is Monty Python’s Life of Brian is a religious satire that does not target specific religions or religious leaders (like, say, Jesus of Nazareth). Instead, it pokes fun at the mindless and fanatical among their followers–it’s an attack on religious zealotry and hypocrisy–things that that fellow from Nazareth didn’t… |

Party at the Palace – The Queen’s Concerts, Buckingham Palace [VHS] $9.63 The Party at the Palace concert is a motley assortment of has-beens and time-wasters, a curious number of whom felt it proper to celebrate Queen Elizabeth’s 50 years by singing old Motown songs badly. The concert also features Lenny Henry shouting and an extended plug for Queen’s (that’s the band) risible musical We Will Rock You. Bewilderingly, Party at the Palace is not only redeemed, but made w… |
