How does a short circuit drain/ damage a battery? Also, how does the battery recharge?
In a short circuit, electrons are quickly flowing from the negative to the positive terminal. But doesn’t an alternator send electrons to the battery too? And I’ve also heard that the alternator works at a higher voltage to charge the battery! Whats the difference? How does the alternators current not harm the battery?….im lost
Yes, alternators do send electrons to the battery. They send power off to the distributor while your engine is running, and they also send some power to the battery to charge it up. Batteries send out power to start the engine. Once the engione is started, the engine turns the alternator via belt(s), which in turn recharges the batteries.
And yes, alternators do usually put out more voltage than the amount that car batteries put out. The thing is, the alternators output current doesn’t directly go to the battery. It is connected to a voltage regulator that filters the input current, bringing it down to the specified voltage that the battery is designed to handle.
