Show Volume

How do I get it to show the volume bar when I press the external volume buttons on my Dell laptop?

It used to show a volume bar when I pressed the external volume buttons. Then my computer got screwed up and I had to get it repaired. Now when I press the volume buttons, it controls the volume but it doesn’t show the volume bar. I liked it when it showed the volume bar. How can I get it to show the volume bar again?
