Is it illegal to make my OWN dvd and sell them?.?
Okay so what i plan on doing later in the year is making a dvd with MY OWN footage of me and my friends bmxing and skateboarding…. i plan to then convert all of our footage into a good dvd…. i was wondering if it is illegal to make the dvd and then sell it too the public like not being sold in stores but just like to my friends that want a copy at the skatepark or maybe even have the local skateshop sell some copys….. so my question is : Is it illegal to make my dvd and sell it too the public and make a profit off this?.?……. Also would i need to bring this movie to a lawyer to get it like “made to be mine so no-one can copy the dvd” like get is copyrighted or whatever it needs like that?.?
If you compose and record a song, write a novel or poem, or create a movie, you are the copyright holder. You have the right to say that your work may be copied for free, or you can say that your work may be copied only if you get money for it, or virtually any other terms that you choose.That includes the right to sell it yourself or through somebody else (for instance, a store or a web site). You will have to take into account your costs to produce and sell the DVDs (including some money for the store so that they can and will sell them for you), and what your time is worth, as well as what people will be willing to pay for them.
If your movie includes anything that somebody else has a copyright on, you have to get permission to use it. So if there is a radio playing nearby, and your movie happens to pick up the music being played, you could have problems. This has happened to people making documentaries, when only a small bit of a song was caught by accident, or when somebody spoke some words that also happened to be part of the lyrics of a song (as little as 4 words).
I am not a lawyer, but I have read a fair amount about copyright, because it affects my career in computers. When in doubt, consult a lawyer.
