Which Came First? The Elegant Woman or the Silk Scarf?
There are always conundrums in the world. The most common concerns the chicken and the egg. Who really did come first? The same logic applies to elegance and silk scarves. Do elegant women naturally select silk scarves, or do women become elegant by choosing silk scarves?
Silk scarves have a long and respected history of grace, fashion and sophistication. Time has witnessed their flow from lengthy floating dresses to elegant dinner gowns to smart pantsuits. Silk scarves have embraced women’s fashion for centuries. Some of the most beautiful women in the world have worn a scarf tossed around the neck and/or over the head and shoulders. In Italy, consider Sophia Loren, in the United States, Grace Kelly and, in England, the ideal example was Joanna Lumley. All these women made silk scarves their own personal trademark, encouraging other women to adapt this symbol of refinement, quality and style.
Arguably, such women, no matter what they wore, would have looked glamorous. That said, it can easily be added how silk scarves emphasized or added to their particular appeal. This does indicate that, perhaps, the silk scarf came first. Yet, such women had inordinate sense of quality. They could distinguish between the ordinary and cheap scarves and those superb accessories. A woman with such taste would not have been caught dead in an inferior scarf. This promotes the theory that, perhaps, glamorous women came first.
Perhaps, in such conundrums, both theories are correct. An elegant woman has impeccable taste in selecting the right silk scarf, but the scarf plays its own role by being already an elegant and unique accessory. This is doubly apt when the scarf is hand painted and hand dyed. These magnificent accessories are truly unique in design and color. They are the very best of their kind.
It is a natural mistake to think a designer scarf by Chanel, Hermès, Louis Vuitton and similar names, provide a unique and creative impact. The problem lies in the perception. The expense paid for the name is perceived as exclusivity. Instead, the reality is the scarves are very common. The availability of the product and the number of fake designer items lumps all together as being phony and or fashion follower. Another reality is that these are carbon copy, printed designs with little originality behind them. They lack the handcrafted uniqueness and attention to detail of the artists who create the 100% pure hand painted and dyed silk scarves and shawls.
What we wear categorizes us in a specific way. It indicates our status, our sense of style and our taste. All famous and admired ladies past and present knew this. Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren and Joanna Lumley realized what they wore set them apart as women of distinction, fashion and taste.
