Can ” The spy who came in from the cold” by John Le Carre be read on its own, even though it’s a sequel?

I have just started reading this book (literally a few pages in), and I have just found out it’s a sequel. Can somebody who has read this book confirm I don’t need to read the first book by John Le Carre (Call for the Dead) to understand and appreciate this book?

The spy who came in from the cold is fine as a stand alone book. I never thout of it as a seauel, to tell you the truth.
