Theodor Dreyer
What do you consider to be the top 5 historical films?

10 points for the best-supported, most knowledgeable answer.

Mine are:

1. The Passion of Joan of Arc (1928)-Carl Theodor Dreyer
2. Andrei Rublev (1966)-Andrei Tarkovsky
3. Battleship Potemkin (1925)-Sergei Eisenstein
4. Aguirre, The Wrath of God (1972)-Wernor Herzog
5. Napoleon (1927)-Abel Gance
Runners-up: The Leopard (1963), Birth of a Nation (1915), Intolerance (1917), Gone with the Wind (1939), Berlin Alexanderplatz (1980) and Henry V (1944).
Historical, as in set in an important period in history, and generally (but not necessarily) dealing with real people, not as in the historical importance of the film.

i am going to agree with your list. I would add Roland Joffe’s The Mission, the forgotten Milius classic The Wind and The Lion and the overlooked by teenage girls because it doesn’t have Leonardo DiCRaprio A Night To Remember.

it is nice to see someone in Yahoo Answers who takes their movie watching seriously and doesn’t think that Pirates of the Caribbean is the best movie ever made.

Carl Dreyer’s The Passion of Joan of Arc is as truly mythic as any film ever shot, its artistic achievement rivaled by its turbulent history. The focal point of controversy when released in 1928, the original film was lost for a half-century until an intact copy of Dreyer’s original version was recovered in the early ’80s.Seeing Joan of Arc today remains a cinematic revelation, its approach to sto…

In this chilling, atmospheric film from 1932, Danish director Carl Theodor Dreyer favors style over story, offering a minimal plot that draws only partially from established vampire folklore. The …
